Do I Need a Real Estate Lawyer?

“Real Estate Matters:
Revealing a real estate lawyer’s role.”

The Edmonton Journal‘s Scott Bollinger has written a helpful series of articles called Real Estate Matters. In this edition, he breaks down what a real estate lawyer does, and why you need one when buying or selling properties. Link to the article: HERE.

The whole thing is worth a read, but two quotes stood out. The first is applicable in general:

“A real estate lawyer is a valuable partner in any real estate transaction, even the relatively seamless ones. But as a deal grows more complex, that’s where legal advice and guidance is particularly crucial.”

The second quote is a key point for anyone buying and selling real estate in Alberta, which is one of our specialties at RMLO Law LLP:

“In some U.S. states, real estate escrow or trust services don’t have to be performed by a lawyer. In Alberta they do, and they’re essential to any transaction that isn’t between you and your parents. In essence, they prevent people from getting screwed.”
